My doctor said I might need surgery.  Is it possible to avoid back surgery and still stop the pain?

At Living Well Medical in NYC, giving patients alternatives to back and spine surgery is part of our goal. Back surgery is permanent and irreversible. In many cases, surgery does accomplish its goals. We explore every option possible to help you find relief without going under the knife.

I have a herniated disc and am looking for treatment options.  Who is and isn't a candidate for spinal decompression therapy?

People suffering with a herniated or bulging disc, spinal stenosis or degenerative disc disease are among those who often respond well to non-surgical decompression therapy. However, an MRI must be examined by our doctors before starting a program. Even in cases where a patient is not eligible for decompression, we can usually still help ease the pain.

People who have had spinal fusion surgery or who have had hardware like screws or plates implanted are not candidates for spinal decompression therapy.

Can you recommend a mattress that will better support my back?

Absolutely!  We are happy to make recommendations for more relaxing, restful sleep with a better mattress. Simply ask the doctor during your consultation for more information.

How effective is chiropractic at stopping back pain?

Misalignments in the spine caused by bad posture, poor habits or another reason (like an accident, trauma or inherited problem) are very often best treated with non-invasive methods like chiropractic adjustment.  Neck pain, shoulder pain, and other types of joint pain are also good matches for treatment with chiropractic medicine.
